vSAM Tool Instructions

Note: If you are unable to run the vCollector tool for any reason, please click on the Manual Data Collection Path link below, and you will be guided through the Manual Data Collection process.
vCollector is a PowerShell script that uses VMware’s PowerCLI module/snap-in to collect licensing data from vCenters or vSphere standalone hosts.
Technical Requirements​
vCollector must be run from a machine that meets the following requirements and that is able to connect to the target vCenter or vSphere host.

  • PowerShell 3.0 or higher (pre-installed on Windows 8+ and Windows Server 2012+)
  • PowerCLI (available here)
Instructions

Step 3

Repeat these instructions once for each set of linked vCenters and standalone ESXi hosts
​
  1. Save the vCollector text file to a machine that meets the above technical requirements
  2. Change the file extension from "txt" to "ps1"
  3. Right-click on vCollector and select “Run with PowerShell”
  4. When prompted, enter the name or IP address of the vCenter or vSphere host to be scanned
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each vCenter and standalone vSphere host
  6. The output files will be saved to a folder named “VMware Data” in the same location the script was run from
